An American Tragedy (1931 never filmed) Based on the Theodore Dreiser novel published in 1925. Paramount suggested this as a possible project for Eisenstein, but his screenplay and deterministic/Marxist approach was rejected. The movie was made a short time later by Josef Von Sternberg and again in 1951 by George Stevens and renamed A Place in the Sun.
